Shit Happens. Just Keep Moving Forward.

February 22nd, 2021 at 10:51 pm

Short story, DH's baby mama is taking him to court and it's becoming very apparent that her motive is for money. I don't want to get into full detail because it's not my story to tell, but it angers me how someone can have such hatred towards someone and fabricate a story to ruin their life.

It's heartbreaking to me because the money we were supposed to use to pay down some debt is now going towards lawyer fees. Currently, we've already blown $15,000 from our savings just to cover these lawyer fees. My question to this community, I have $1,100 put aside that's separate from our savings account, should I use it to pay down a debt (if so, which one do you suggest) or would it be safer to save it for lawyer fees?

I'm so sorry to hear this. If you could not pay up front for all of your attorney fees, how would you handle that? Would you have to borrow the money? If yes, what sort of loan fees and interest would you pay?

You have some very high interest debt, so it may be to your advantage to pay off high interest debt and take on new lower-interest debt to pay the attorney. If you do not have access to lower-interest debt to pay the attorney, it makes more sense to make minimum payments on debt and save up as much as you can to pay the attorney.

I agree with Petunia. What would be the option if you have to borrow, and can you borrow for attorney fees? Is this child nearing the age of 18 or can you anticipate this going on for some years?

I would hang onto that extra money and pay minimum payments on everything until the nightmare is over. I am so sorry you are going through this. Best wishes in the outcome of the case.

Usually lawyers just bill you at 0% if I'm not mistaken? They keep a tab after the retainer?
